Medusa

In my dream I wake up
terrified
I run away,
leaving someone behind.
Find safety and collapse
exhausted
curl and rock myself calm.
Drift into  slumber
that I wake up from, in my dream
terrified
so I run, again
abandoning someone,
leaving a place that I thought I had left before
behind me.
collapse into safety,
spent
knees to chest, head bowed, grounded
to fall asleep
only to awake again in my dream
terrified.
I  up and run, to escape
leaving a place I have left so many times
leaving someone, helplessly
I see it clearly
my safety turns me
inside out
because you cannot leave yourself behind
and flee from all
that is carried
in your own
heart.
I
awake
from my dream
terrified.
Wide eyed
and frozen.
